Made in California: Selections from the Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation

Since the 1960s, California has evolved as a center for contemporary art that rivals New York. Frederick R. Weisman was a pioneering collector whose rise as an important patron of the arts paralleled the contemporary art scene in Los Angeles. He counted many of the city's top artists as his close friends and built a collection that reflects this personal relationship. This selection of works exemplifies how these LA artists were inspired by their daily life and surroundings - the local terrain, vibrant sun, beautiful sunsets, blue skies, surfboards, and the fast, flashy cars of California culture.

This exhibition highlights a selection of exciting and diverse movements that played a decisive role in defining the visual arts in the Golden State.  Fetish Finish artists such as Ron Davis and Craig Kauffman produced immaculately polished works adopted from the smooth finishes of the 1960’s hot rods and surfboards. Light and Space artists such as Larry Bell and Robert Irwin created — minimal, experiential and unique to California that reflects the broad glow of our environment.  Newer movements, such as Postmodernism, are also featured in the art of John Baldessari and the fantastic constructions of Tim Hawkinson. Many more iconic artists of the era include Jack Goldstein, Joe Goode, Ed Moses, Ed Ruscha, Robert Therrien, and DeWain Valentine.
